Scouting out the JFK 50 miler course

A few weeks ago two multiple-year JFK finishers were kind enough to show me the first 19 miles of the JFK 50 miler course. As you might already know, the first 15 miles of the course are mostly on the Appalachian trail, which means there is plenty of elevation change and some technical areas as well.  So if you’re going to scout out some of the course, this is the part you want to check out so you know what you’re getting yourself into.

The trail was about what I expected:  Some steep and technical areas with plenty of runnable trail in-between. Of course, on race day I’ll be sharing the trail with 1,199 other runners, so hopefully I don’t get stuck in too many traffic jams.
